SeapixOnlineDisplaying 700 of 11115 TAN SUO YI HAO (1984/5073gt/2448dwt/IMO 8315451, ex- HAI YANG SHI YOU 299, HAI YANG SHI YO 299, SEAWAY EXPLORER, NORTHERN EXPLORER, EXPLORER II) - A rare visitor to Auckland, the Chinese research ship TAN SUO YI HAO (1984/5073gt/2448dwt/IMO 8315451, ex- HAI YANG SHI YOU 299, HAI YANG SHI YO 299, SEAWAY EXPLORER, NORTHERN EXPLORER, EXPLORER II) arrived in stiff northerly breezes from Sanya in China for her first visit during which she will take on stores and bunker fuel.
Built by Amels BV of Makkum, Netherlands in 1984 and launched as EXPLORER II, she is now almost unrecognisable as the same vessel.
She is owned by the China Government Institute of Acoustics and operated and managed by Qingdao Huayang Maritime of Qingdao, China.
During her time in NZ and South Pacific waters she will investigate marine life in the depths of the Kermadec Trench in company with scientists from New Zealand's NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research).
