SeapixOnlineDisplaying 1 of 1 MATANUI (ex-SAN LUIS) was built in Picton, NZ in 1923 by Ernie Lane. She was designed specifically for handling the waters of the Cook Strait. She was put up for sale two years later when she was snapped up by buyers in Auckland.
She spent three years during WWII as a naval patrol launch in Fiji.
Once back in Auckland waters after the war she later underwent redesign in the early 1950’s and spent some time moored of the Devonport waterfront.
She is seen here at speed outbound passing Auckland’s commercial port. (Source: Mr. Harold Kidd) Keywords: matanui, san luis, classic launches, waitemata woodies, motor launch, vintage launches, auckland, new zealand, nz |
