Queens Wharf is currently, and has been for some considerable number of months, the subject of NZ Govt/Auckland City Council/Auckland Regional Council discussions to develop a dedicated cruise ship terminal and "party central" entertainment venue in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The wharf, complete with two old and dilapidated cargo sheds dating from early last century, looks likely to remain as such, as locals mayors on19 Feb 2010 refused to contribute ratepayers money into the NZ$100m project. Proposed structures have been described as "lacklustre, underwhelming and mediocre".
