SeapixOnlineDisplaying 2153 of 11052 2010 AUCKLAND ANNIVERSARY DAY TUG RACE - The Ports of Auckland tugs DALDY (1977/226grt/IMO 7519127), WAKA KUME and WAIPAPA following astern of the vintage steam tug WILLIAM C DALDY as the finish line beckons. WILLIAM C DALDY was left floundering in the wake of the other competitors this year, the victim of a bad load of coal. No matter how hard the stokers worked the boilers were low on pressure. However, good sportsmanship prevailed, the crews of the big more modern tugs stopping for some 10 minutes to allow the oldie to catch up. Not content with just slowing down to lessen the gap, the newer tugs fell in astern allowing the Grand Old Lady of Auckland's harbour to lead them over the line. A very nice gesture indeed! After all, the tug race is all about fun, not winning. |
