SeapixOnlineDisplaying 2825 of 11113 FNS JACQUES CARTIER (L 9033, 1300 tonnes displacement), a French Navy light transport ship based in New Caledonia, seen berthing in Auckland, New Zealand 29 August 08. On arrival she berthed at the boiler wharf within the Royal New Zealand Navy base at Devonport. She will be drydocked at the VT Fitzroy shipyard next week for a major mid-life refit estimated to last about 12 weeks.
The main repair items include overhaul of the full propulsion train including main engines, gear box and shaft lines, overhaul of auxiliary generators, overhaul of ship refrigeration and air conditioning services as well as freshwater, sea water and sewage systems. Overhauls will be carried out on deck equipment, including cranes, winches and capstans. Preservation of external hull and decks, as well as cargo ramps, bow access doors and tank spaces will be carried out as well as miscellaneous steel work, survey and outfitting repairs.
VT Fitzroy, after months of working with major French Defence contractor DCNS, are elated at having secured the contract for this refit after facing stiff international competition.
This is the first foreign naval vessel to have ever been drydocked for a commercial refit at the Devonport yard.
