SeapixOnlineDisplaying 216 of 11102 HMS MONTROSE (F236) - For the first time since May 2003, Auckland today began playing host to a vessel of Britain’s Royal Navy, the 1994-commissioned Type 23 Duke-class frigate HMS Montrose,.
Not since the visit nearly 16 year ago by HMS Marlborough (now sailing as the Chilean Navy’s Almirante Condel) has the white ensign flown from the stern of a British warship in Auckland.
HMS Montrose is in the early stages of a three-year deployment from her homeport of Devonport, Plymouth and has visited Chile and Easter and Pitcairn Islands while en-route to New Zealand.
During her global environmental and security deployment, the ship’s crew have been involved in recording plastic pollution around some of the Pacific’s most remote island locations.
Following this mission the ship will head for Japan, the fourth RN ship to visit that country in the last year. She will assist in enforcing UN sanctions against nearby North Korea. However, HMS Montrose will eventually be based at the brand new RN Support Facility in Bahrain and undertake duties in the Gulf region for a planned period of three years.
HMS Montrose is due to depart Devonport, Auckland on 20 January. Keywords: hms montrose, f236, duke class, type 23, frigate, warship, royal navy, rn, navy, naval, environment, plastic, oceanic plastic, oceans, pitcairn, easter island, UN, auckland, new zealand |
